I am in a career where people get fired and let go in a snap of a finger. I have been called many things for wanting to be a basketball coach. You’re a fool, weirdo, waste of breath, and many more. At one point I wanted to change my career to prove them all wrong just to shut their mouths. I wanted to impress everyone around me but for what?
People brought up many good points like….
Jayy, how will you provide for your family?
You’re not going to see your kids?
Coaches move a lot and your willing to do that to your family?
They made many great points and it honestly scared me. For many who do not know me, I am a family-oriented person and I wanted to be there for them when I have my own. I want to go my siblings’ weddings, support their children, and be there for them too.

I started to look at careers that could sustain a future family. Looking for this cookie cutter life so I could play it safe. Computer programming made good money or even being behind a desk could support a family. But every time I would come back to the same thing…
OPENING: Assistant Coach Position
LOOKING FOR: High School Men’s Varsity Coach
NOW HIRING: Director of Men Basketball Operations
…and it was like looking at your favorite toy in a window of a toy store, but your friends say it is a waste of money. Why was I so afraid of pursing it?
I just did not want to fail.
When you get the chance read Luke 7:1-10. It is about a Roman Centurion who had a sick servant. The Roman did not consider himself worthy to come to Jesus, so he sent some Jewish elders to speak on his behalf. The Centurion knew if Jesus said the word then it would be done.
All Jesus had to do was say one word and BAM the Roman’s servant was going to be healed. When you go down to verse nine, Jesus marveled at the Centurion’s belief. Like how can you amaze an all knowing and all-powerful God? Through your belief.
There are so many more instances where people’s belief or faith in God produced miracles. Take Moses and the Red Sea for example. Would you not think Moses was crazy if you saw him holding a stick to split the Red Sea?
It was a late night and my dad came home. I was reading the Bible (out of Job) and we started talking. He brought up the story of Moses and the Red Sea. If you ever get to meet this man, you are in for a gift.
He told me, “God does not work until you do,” and he was right.
We talked and he asked what was bothering me. I give this man credit, I do not like sharing my feeling or thoughts, but this man has so much wisdom and knowledge. And came to this…
I was worried trying to impress these people but was willing to ignore God. I should have gone to these colleges and talked to the staff. It should have never crossed my mind to give up on a dream. I should have stepped into faith rather from running it.

The next thing my dad asked was, “what made the Red Sea split?”
I responded, “when he put out the staff.”
My dad reponsed with, “you’re missing a step.”
And I had no idea what it was, so I answered with ‘I don’t know what I’m missing.”
He said, “when Moses had the faith to hold his staff out.”
and my dad went to bed on that note.
When was I going to start believing that God is who he says he is? The right door will open, the right woman will come in my life, and He will provide all that I need. There was nothing to be scared of. All I have to do is step into faith just like Moses. Moses was not the only one who believed God for who he is.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
Moses did cross the Red Sea.
Mary did have a baby as a virgin.
David did beat Goliath.
Sarah had a child at an old age.
The Roman Centurion’s servant was healed.
Jesus did die, defeated death, and rose on the third day!
Whatever God has planned for you is not too big for him. Do not let others sway your mind because it does not look right to them. I’m finally stepping into faith. I chose to put my faith in God, and I have had opportunities at NCAA D2s, Juco’s and high schools to be a part of their basketball staff. The thing is, I only applied for one of those.
There was no need to fear the future because God has provided and still is. I will find the right girl who doesn’t mind that I coach. I can be a part of my kids’ lives and my siblings’ kids lives. I’ll still be close with my siblings and involved with them. I will provide for my future family. It takes me putting in the work and stepping into faith.
Coach Solomon always says this to me, “you set the pins up and I will knock them down.”
Same thing with God, you got to put in the work to set those pins up and let God knock them down.
I want my faith to make Jesus say, “Dang, he doesn’t have a lot going for him, but man he believes in me.” I want a faith that makes Jesus marvel.
Will Jesus marvel at your unbelief or belief in Him?
